The house sits in a dense plotted development. That as well as the clients request for a design with a sense of space beyond the immediate caused the design to be introverted. The brief called for the residence as well as office of a single person.
The overall plan consists of two squares, each two stories high, connected by a bridge at either level. One square consisted of the private areas like bedrooms and the other square consisted of the more public area like the living & dining on the lower floor and the office on the upper floor. The two squares are stark white while facing west with no openings that would have otherwise allowed heat to radiate into the house. An external staircase aids in providing the privacy to the residential part of the house from the visitors to the office.
The façade material, fenestration detailing and colours have all been designed with respect for the subtropical semi-arid climate of Delhi. All the white has been broken up using textures while retaining the monolithic composition of the house.
The client also requested the house as being a display space for her work which related to handcrafted items. Some of the features like two columns and the entrance door are handcrafted antiques taken from the client’s collection.
